Who was Lorenzo Ghiberti?
Lorenzo Ghiberti was born in Florence, 1,378 and he died the 1st of 1,455. He was a sculptor, goldsmith, architect and a writer of the Quattro cento.
Lorenzo Ghiberti was born in Florence, 1,378 and he died the 1st of 1,455. He was a sculptor, goldsmith, architect and a writer of the Quattro cento.
He started to work like and goldsmith. But he become famous because he won a tournament of decorating the baptistery doors of the Cathedral of Florence in 1,401.
After he won the tournament he became the most famous decorator of doors during 50 years, and he made a very big workshop.
He worked more than 20 years in the Second Doors of the Baptistery of Florence. (From 1,403 to 1,424)
His doors had a lot of success that after he finished that, the traders of Florence entrusted him to do a double third door for the Cathedral, and he finished that in 1,452.
This door is decorated with two bronze bas relief that represent scenes of the Old Testament, this doors are made by a renacentist technique.

He went to another tournament and he become finalist but in this case the winner was Brunelleschi. The prize of the tournament was to construct the dome of the cathedral Santa María de las Flores.
In his last years he wrote 3 parts of ^I commentarii^, (the commentaries), in which he included a lot of references to painters and Italian sculptors. And he also made and autobiography, which id the first that we conserve of an artist.
Lorenzo Ghiberti died the 1st of December of 1,455.
